The frontier moved, but your legal tech stack is stuck

A GC at a major financial services company told me last week he's been on the same e-billing system for years and uses it exactly as he did "10 years ago." We both had a chuckle about that, but beneath the laugh was a serious issue.

If you’re using your legal tech the same way you did years ago, that’s pretty telling.

The right platform does more than keep up with how you work; it changes it.

As AI resets every aspect of how legal teams manage their spend, sticking with the same tool (especially with e-billing) doesn’t mean you chose well. And using those tools exactly the same way a decade later means they captured your business and quit trying. You’ve outgrown the platform, or it gave up on you; either way, you’re just renewing dead weight year after year.

Stuck by design

Truth is, once you're embedded on a platform, most vendors stop competing for you. They know the cost of switching does the work the product used to. That’s the business model.

That might be okay if the market stood still, but it doesn't. Think about E-billing, which was built to police the hourly rate. But the hourly rate is being dismantled as AI shrinks deliverable times, CFOs increase scrutiny, and in-house teams take on more work that used to go out the door. A platform that only tells you what you have spent and leaves you reacting to each invoice is not giving you the control that your board wants to see. It also sends up a giant red flag that you’re unable to adapt.

Here's a quick test: when was the last time a piece of software actually changed how you work? Next step, ask every vendor in your stack, “What will I be doing on this platform in two years that I can't do today?

Staying with a stale platform costs you more than money. Every renewal cycle you spend defending (or acquiescing to) the status quo is a cycle you're not spending to build leverage: knowing what a matter should cost before a firm tells you, seeing spend clearly enough to negotiate from strength rather than reacting to an invoice, and missing the KPIs which actually demonstrate the value of legal work across the business.

Standing still isn't a features problem and it’s more than a money problem. It's a control problem where someone else starts making decisions about your budget that you should have made first.

Moving on

PERSUIT customers can now fully scope and price work from a single-sentence prompt. That's it. That’s all our AI agent, Persi, needs to help you benchmark a matter, select the right law firm, and set a meaningful budget — real value before the work even begins. That wasn't possible a year ago. That's the market moving, whether your stack moves with it or not.

It's the difference between a tool that's still checking line items against billing guidelines after the fact vs. a platform that prices a matter before it starts and ensures budget transparency before an invoice is ever submitted. That gap widens every month you stand still.

Stand still long enough and everyone else in the building is working ahead of the invoice while legal still lags behind it. That GC and I could laugh about software standing still, but I’m not sure that your CFO would find it all that funny...

Cheers,

-Jim
